The Soulmate Equation

To Jess’s surprise, a photograph of her in River’s coat makes the front page of the Monday Tribune, along with a flattering article about the pair’s blossoming relationship. At Twiggs, Fizzy insists on reading a copy of the paper to Jess. When asked if the experience was fun, Jess replies that it was awkward, but good—and mentions her and River’s physical proximity. Suddenly, River strolls in “with the sweeping confidence of a king through a court” (170). Jess feels the air change and knows everyone is watching them. River smiles, and Fizzy asks Jess what she did to him. He strides over and sets down drinks for both women. He asks Jess if she saw the article and tells her she did a great job. She returns the compliment, finding herself immersed in another sexual fantasy. Later, Fizzy comments on the chemistry between Jess and River in the paper’s photographs. Jess realizes that Juno will be at the library and will likely see her in the paper.

Jess and Fizzy run to the library and sneak to the Adult Services section, trying not to attract attention so they can grab the newspapers and hide them. When no one is looking, they grab the stack of papers and hide them behind a row of novels.
