Tobias feels something is going to happen soon. Yesterday, he overheard Evelyn mention a demonstration. During breakfast, he hears shouts and runs out to see a group of factionless on Michigan Avenue outside Erudite Headquarters. The group chants “Death to factions.” They gather around the bowls used in the Choosing Ceremony and begin dumping their contents into the street. Some citizens still loyal to the factions try to stop the factionless; an Erudite man grabs Edward’s sledgehammer. Edward breaks free and swings again, but he is off balance and hits the Erudite in the shoulder, killing him. More people rush the factionless, and a fight breaks out. Tobias grabs Edward and runs to Tris on the edge of the crowd. Gunshots ring out, and the group scatters. Someone shot Edward.

Tobias is waiting in the hospital inside headquarters when Evelyn rushes in, asking Tobias if he’s hurt. Tobias says he’s fine, but Edward is dead. He sees Evelyn’s reaction and realizes they are closer than he knew. Tobias asks Evelyn why she didn’t tell him about the demonstration, but she responds that she didn’t know. He knows Evelyn is lying but doesn’t press her.
